Local Area
Islay is the most southerly of the hebrides and offers something for everyone. From secluded beaches where you could walk for miles without meeting another soul to lively entertainment and a brilliant welcome from the friendly locals, Islay has it all. The village of Bowmore lies right at Islay's heart on the banks of Lochindaal.
Things to do
There are many historical sites on Islay, Finlaggan with its visitors centre, Kildalton Cross, and the American War Monument on the Mull of Oa are some examples. The Museum of Islay Life in Port Charlotte offers a fascinating insight into a bygone age.
Whisky lovers will be in heaven as the island boasts 8 working malt whisky distilleries, Bowmore being the closest, they all offer tours and the opportunity to sample a dram or two.
For the more active visitor the island offers, cycling, walking, birdwatching, horseriding, kayaking, golfing and fishing.
